Mike and I decided that it was just too beautiful yesterday to sit around. We went to Lowes and bought some veggies for our garden, but we didn’t stop there. We saw a lot of people buying flowers. Lowes was so crowed with flower hungry people, that we could barely get down half the aisles (not to mention there was this crazy lady who was spraying everyone with water). So, despite the old rule of waiting until after Mother’s Day, we bought several flowers too (I checked the weather for the rest of the month, and it sounds like we’ll be in safe temperatures every evening until May).
It took us about two hours, tearing out the old roots of dead plants and filling the terracotta colored pots with new life. After removing the dead roots with a small garden rake/claw, Mike fertilized everything with organic blood meal. Then we started working the dry soil. We got dirt all over our clothes and even in our eyes. But it was a great two hours. Gardening is a refreshing way to bond with Mike and I’m so glad he enjoys it. Now we can have a cup of tea together on the balcony and look at our beautiful garden.
Our peach tree and the herbs that survived the winter. We lost thyme and had to replenish basil. Chives are looking straggly, so I’ll probably go out today and take some clippings. If you cut chives down to about an inch or two, they’ll grow back strong.
Row of our pretty flowers, which will only flourish and look better as the months change.
Mike’s hot peppers (jalapeño, hot Thai, and a larger pepper) and tomatoes (hearty heirloom and cherry).
To the left is a pot of orange, yellow, and red flowers that Mike calls the fiery pot. Next is purple sage. And to the right is our first try at strawberries. My parents use to grow strawberries when I was a kid, so I really wanted to try this with Mike.
In the right corner is an orange flower that Mike picked out (can’t remember the name), and the Heart of Hawaii plants his mom gave us this year and last. Behind them are the absolutely gorgeous wind chimes that Mike bought me for Christmas. We’re hoping that in the corner they won’t make as much noise out of respect for our neighbors.

The plantings look nice, good luck with unpredictable Mother Nature. You can always cover the plants if one of those unexpected cold snaps arrives.
